You Are Not

You are not the mistakes of your father nor the sins of your mother.

You are not the bearer of their consequences nor the finisher of unfinished business.

You are not the fulfiller of their dreams.

You are not the keeper of their secrets, shame and guilt.

You are not the payment of their debts nor the projection of their illusions.

Their thoughts are not yours and their feelings are their own.

They are humans first and parents second. They also pave their way as they go.

They do not know everything and therefore do not always know what's right.

Their choices are their lessons and not our compass.

They do not own our lives, our dreams, our money.

They had their chances the same way as we have ours now.

What we are now is not because of them. What they are now is not because of us.

We are the sum of all our choices.

We were born through them, but we are not them.

We are all human. There is no God amongst us.

Yet there is God within us.

And we are free to choose who we want to be.

Free to think, feel and do differently.
